The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) is a secular international organization of people of Indian origin. GOPIO was founded at the First Global Convention of People of Indian Origin in New York in 1989 when delegates from 35 countries attended this convention. Over the years, GOPIO has taken up issues of civil rights and human rights violations of the Indian Diaspora around the world and are pleased to say that our communities have joined the political mainstream in most of the countries with significant Diaspora population. In 35 years, GOPIO has grown bigger and better in mobilizing the community for common causes. GOPIO has been in the forefront to take up issues of common interest of the Indian community living outside India.

GOPIO’s Dallas, Texas chapter wishes to continue and emulate the fine work done by our international chapter and enhance the presence and influence to benefit the Indian diaspora in the Dallas, Texas region.

GOPIO Dallas TX is a chapter of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin and serves as a non-partisan, secular, civic and community service organization – promoting awareness of Indian culture, customs and contributions of PIOs through community programs, forums, events and youth activities. GOPIO-DALLAS-TEXAS is incorporated as a non-profit organization and will be applying as a registered 501(c) 3 non-profit organization with US Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

It seeks to strengthen partnerships and create an ongoing dialogue with local communities.

To promote the well-being of People of Indian Origin (PIO) and to enhance cooperation and communication between PIOs and other communities.

Promote awareness of the American Way of life amongst our organization.

Utilize our collective skills and experience for contribution to society.

Present and promote the interest of India and PIOs and help shape relevant policies.

Promote better understanding of Indian history, culture and customs.

Mobilize the growing professional and intellectual resources of Indian Americans for economic and social programs beneficial to the community.

Build a collective voice for Indian Americans in the Dallas area and Texas.

About GOPIO Community

Indian Diaspora community is the fastest growing Diaspora community worldwide. Currently, it constitutes over 35 million people spread into 180 countries. Overseas Indians and People of Indian Origin are remitting over $120 billion dollars every year which has helped India to reach a foreign reserve of over $640 billion. This flow will continue at the same level or more in the near future. GOPIO has set its priorities in pooling NRI/PIO resources, both financial and professional, for the benefit of the PIOs, the countries they come from and India.

Currently, GOPIO International has over 100 chapters in 35 countries. In an effort to promote business and investment opportunities, GOPIO had launched GOPIO Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) in 2017 (KNOW MORE). To look after the varied interests of the Overseas Indian community, GOPIO has the following departments as councils, i.e. GOPIO Women’s Network, GOPIO Youth and Young Professionals Network, GOPIO Council on Diaspora Seniors, GOPIO Academic Council, GOPIO Human Rights Council, GOPIO Cultural Council, GOPIO Science and Technology Council, GOPIO Media Council and GOPIO Health and Wellness Council,

What does GOPIO do?

GOPIO (Global Organization of People of Indian Origin) works as a global advocacy, policy-influence, and representation body for the Indian diaspora, especially NRIs and PIOs, by engaging governments, institutions, and policymakers to protect and advance the interests of overseas Indians. GOPIO actively engages with U.S. government officials and policymakers on critical immigration and diaspora-related issues. Recent advocacy efforts—such as high-level engagement on H-1B and immigration policies—demonstrate how GOPIO works behind the scenes to ensure fair treatment of Indians.

Protecting Diaspora Interests
When major immigration actions are announced—like the U.S. State Department’s suspension of immigrant visa processing for 75 countries—GOPIO’s sustained advocacy helps ensure that India is not adversely impacted, reflecting the strong standing of Indians abroad.

GOPIO highlights the economic, professional and social contributions of NRIs and PIOs, reinforcing the narrative that Indians add value rather than burden public systems. This positioning influences how policymakers perceive the Indian community.
